Michael Malavazos

About

Michael Malavazos is a fellow member of IChemE and has a degree in Chemical Engineering and a master’s degree in public policy and management. After graduating from the University of Adelaide back in 1985 he has held a number of roles in the petrochemical and oil and gas industry. He has held the role as the head oil and gas regulator for the last 18 years in South Australia. His current role is Director of the energy regulation team in the South Australian Department for Energy and Mining. 

 

His regulatory responsibilities and knowledge and experience include a broad range of oil and gas exploration and production and processing operations, including drilling, enhanced oil recovery, tight gas development and gas plant and pipeline operations. He is also widely recognised and respected for his extensive knowledge in process safety management, geothermal energy, carbon capture and storage and renewable energy and hydrogen production.

 

Since 2011 Michael has chaired the Australian Standards Committee for carbon, capture and storage technologies and is actively involved in the Australian Pipelines Standards Committee ME-038 and the International Standards Committee for Petroleum and Petrochemical Standards, ISO/TC 67.

 

He is also a lecturer in process safety management at the University of Adelaide School of Chemical Engineering.
